New flexible microprocessor made of ultra-thin two-dimensional material molybdenum disulfide

Flexible electronics can benefit from ultra-thin materials of atomic thickness, which are used for manufacturing microprocessors. Recent breakthroughs have been made in this area by researchers at the Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, and the EU's flagship graphene project. These researchers are expected promote the development of intelligent hardware and applications like the Internet of Things.
"Two-dimensional Material" is a term used to describe a material which can be moved freely (planar movement) in only two dimensions on a non-nanoscale (between 1 and 100 nm), for example graphene or transition metal compounds, such as tungsten dielenide, molybdenum sulfide.
The two-dimensional materials are usually composed of several layers of molecules. Our previous focus was on graphene. Graphene and other materials like it, such as the transition metal disulfide compound, are two-dimensional. The materials are soft, small, light, and have good semiconductor characteristics. They are also suitable for flexible electronics. .

Thomas Mueller of Vienna's Technical University has been studying two-dimensional material. He believes that materials with two dimensions are the best candidates for manufacturing microprocessors in the future. Molybdenum diulfide, a material composed of molybdenum molecules and sulfur atoms has only a three-atom thickness, making it a two dimensional material.

In order to achieve this, he worked with the research team of Technical University of Vienna as well the researchers of EU Graphene Flagship Project in creating a transistor consisting of two-dimensional "molybdenum Disulfide" MoS2. A new type of microprocessor is formed by 115 such transistors. This kind of microprocessor currently performs one-bit logical operations. It is expected that it will expand in the near future to multi-bit operations.
