Do your coil machining operations maintain or improve quality? Are you just trying to keep the quality of the mill put into their flat-rolled products, or do you have equipment that can improve the quality and further add value to the coil processing operation?
In order to maintain material quality, we must first understand flat-rolled metal defects and how people and processes cause them.
Type of shape defect
There are three kinds of flat rolling shape defects, each of which requires different methods and equipment configuration. In ascending order of complexity, the three categories are:
1. Ground to ground differential length. This includes coil sets and crossbows, which are related issues.
2. Edge length difference. If the edges are longer than the center, wavy edges appear (see Figure 3). If the center is longer than the edge, a center buckle occurs, sometimes referred to as an oil tank or canoe. These defects also include bending and twisting.
Edge waves, buckles, and camber are easy to understand. Torsion is a little bit hard to imagine as an edge-to-edge length differential problem. If we unfold a twisted strip, we see that the sides and the center have different lengths, depending on the geometry of the twist or spiral. Twisting is not simply a coil set on one side and down on the other. A twisted band has a length difference from edge to center to edge, unlike edge waves, which continue throughout the band.
3. Surface - Surface thickness difference, or crown. This is a common problem with slitters, straighteners or straighteners cannot significantly reduce the crown because their work rolls are offset. To do this, a rolling mill with opposite rollers is required.
Source of shape defects
Rolling mills have made great strides in controlling shape and thickness over the past few years, but achieving perfection is still difficult. You need to understand this - not because you are in the mill business, but because you have to talk realistically to the factory about your expectations of product quality.
If possible, the manufacturer would like to produce flat rolls without crowns each time. If they miss this target, they prefer a thicker center for tracking purposes, so the coil runs directly through the mill stand. If the edge is thicker than the center, the coil will not go straight.
