Jack tuna swirl around in a Mexican marine reserve.

The photographer behind a widely circulated image of a scuba diver dwarfed by a "tornado" of fish has come forward to counter claims the photo is a fake.

Scientist Octavio Aburto said he snapped a photo of diver David Castro and a swirling school of jack tuna at the Cabo Pulmo National Park in Mexico's Sea of Cortez last month.

"This 'David and Goliath' image is speaking to the courtship behaviour of one particular species of jack fish," Mr Aburto told Mission Blue.

"I wanted to share this behaviour with others and photography is one way to do that."

The scientist said he had been trying to capture the image since he first witnessed the spectacular behaviour three years ago.

A number of online commentators have questioned the photo's authenticity and asked how Mr Aburto managed to assemble such a large group of fish.

"My response to these questions has been this: of course it is real," he said.

"People can't see the fish participating in these behaviours and those who do witness these behaviours via scuba or snorkel are rarely able to capture it in an image."

Mr Aburto hopes his photo will illustrate the success of Cabo Pulmo and bring attention to other marine reserves in Latin America.
